my journey - the begnning

This is the first post on this website and I thought we could start at the beginning. I want to share my journey through watch collecting. I love wristwatches, I always have. I am very new to this hobby, but I am really enjoying it so far. My goal is to experience watches, learn as much as I can and share that experience with you all.

I have always had an interest in wristwatches, ever since I was a child. I remember receiving a watch for my birthday. I think I was 6 or 7 years old. I am not sure what brand it was, but it was an analogue quartz watch. It had a blue dial and lumed indices. This was the coolest thing I had ever seen, with indices that would light up in dark conditions. I am pretty sure I ended up destroying that watch on the playground.

It was later followed by a Casio F91W that I had until about a few years ago. I remember playing around with the back-light all the time. It wasn`t about telling time, it was all about having something cool on my wrist, something that made me feel good and something to play around with. It was on my wrist 24/7. I slept with the watch on, used the alarm every morning, swam with it and enjoyed it a lot. I found it in a drawer about two years ago, the battery had started leaking and it has broken the quartz module. It was a sad moment, as I have had that watch since I was a kid. Now it is replaced by a Casio F105W, that I use a lot.

Years later, when I had completed my obligatory military duty, I bought a Tissot T-Race T472S. It is a chronograph quartz watch. I bought it to myself, as a rite of passage. I had endured some hardships and had come out the other end a stronger and better man. So I wanted something cool to commemorate that. In retrospect today, I would have gone for a different style of watch. However, that watch also gave me a lot of joy and meant a lot for me. It has been with me through a lot and I still have it. I don`t wear it anymore, because it is too big and heavy and it really doesn’t suit my style.

This brings us to 2022. I hadn’t really used a watch in a long time(except for a Daniel Wellington, but we don`t speak about that). I owned an Apple watch, which gave me a lot of joy. However, I was about to get married and I needed a watch to wear with my tuxedo. I had saved up a bit of money and thought to myself; “I`ll just do a little research, find a nice watch and buy something that will last”. How difficult can it be?

It turned out to be very difficult and overwhelming. There was so much to choose from and I didn`t just want to just buy the first watch I found. I wanted to make sure I bought something that would last me a lifetime and a mechanical watch seemed like something that would last. After weeks of obsessively scouring the internet, I felt lost. There was just too many nice watches, most of them outside of my price range. There was also so much information to take in. I had seen a beautiful Longines Flagship Heritage (L4.795.4.58.0). However, 17 000 NOK (around 1700€) felt like a lot of money. I quickly discovered and accepted the only truth when it comes to watches. Watches are expensive, potentially very expensive. Much more expensive than I thought. I had to change my approach.

One day I discovered Teddy Baldassarre on YouTube and after binge watching his videos I felt like I started to understand. Watches aren’t meant to be bought impulsively. You should take your time. Do research and find that one watch that speaks to you. A watch that suits your lifestyle and that brings you joy. I immediately was hooked and I knew that watch collecting was a hobby I wanted to get into. I have been falling deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole ever since.

Months went by and eventually I ended up buying an Orient Bambino Gen.2. Ver. 2 shortly followed by a Raymond Weill Maestro. A few weeks later I started the Instagram account Klokketimen and here we are. I`ll make sure to tell the story of the Orient and the Raymond Weill in a later post.

This website is my first shot at a blog type post. So make sure to give me feedback and let me know what you think about this idea as I am looking to improve. If you want more watch photography and stories, you can find me on Instagram @Klokketimen. And stay tuned for the next post.

I hope to be able to make one or two articles a month to start with, then we`ll see if I am able to ramp it up. Thank you for reading and see you next time!
